Liverpool are believed to have taken a giant step closer to the signing of Portugal international goalkeeper Rui Patricio after Sporting Lisbon signed a replacement for him, according to the Daily
Sporting announced the signing of Slovenian goalkeeper Azbe Jug from French side Bordeaux on Friday, with him putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.
The 23-year-old reportedly has a £33m release clause installed in his contract, showing that they obviously believe him to be a long term number one at the Estádio José Alvalade.
And Jug’s arrival could spell the end of the line for Patricio’s time at the club.
With Brendan Rodgers looking to add more competition for current first choice Simon Mignolet, he may now be tempted to lodge an £11m bid for the 27-year-old.
Patricio had been hoping to feature in the Champions League next term, and has also emerged as a target for Monaco, but with a fresh challenge at the forefront of his mind he may still accept a drop down into the Europa League.
“I only think day by day,” he said when asked about a move away from Sporting.
“I’ve no huge plans for the future, I live one day at a time.”
