Liverpool are ready to follow up their rejected bid for Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, by making an improved offer for the defender.
Liverpool Transfer News
The Daily Mirror report that the Reds had had a £10m bid turned down for the 24-year-old earlier in the summer, but Brendan Rodgers is still keen to sign the England international, as he looks to bolster his options in the problematic full-back area.
With Glen Johnson’s form looking suspect for much of the last campaign, the Northern Irishman turned to Emre Can to fill in for the final game against Stoke. However, the German midfielder – who had previously done a good job at centre-back – looked completely out of his depth in the role as the Potters took them to the cleaners. With Johnson now gone, his options have become even more sparse.
Meanwhile, Clyne has been one of a number of players that have shone on the south coast this year. While he has been excellent defensively, he has also not been afraid to get forward and offer support down the wing. That versatility has made renewing his contract – which the Mirror report, will expire next summer – one of the top priorities on Ronald Koeman’s summer list.
However, should the former Crystal Palace man make his feelings clear that he will not be signing a new deal, they may decide to sell him during this window to make sure they secure as much money as they can, rather than lose him on a free in 12 months’ time.
Liverpool fans may be slightly nervous however, about the prospect of another Saint arriving on Merseyside. Last year’s acquisitions of Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, and Rickie Lambert have failed to win fans over following a string of inconsistent performances. If Clyne is to join, there will be pressure on him instantly, to prove that he is not another name destined for Kop scrapheap.
