According to the Daily Mirror, the 26-year-old will sign a four year deal on Tyneside, with the fee believed to be around £9m.
If the deal could be pulled off, it would be a massive coup for Steve McClaren’s side heading into next season.
The Dutchman has been in fantastic form for the German club this year. He scored 16 times from just 21 league games, as Dieter Hecking’s men finished second in the Bundesliga, and clinched the German Cup, with Dost scoring in the final victory over Borussia Dortmund. Only three men scored more times that the forward in the top flight last season.
Meanwhile, the Magpies seriously struggled for goals as they came desperately close to falling out of the Premier League. Apart from Papiss Cisse and Ayoze Perez – who managed 18 strikes between them – Newcastle’s top goalscorers managed four goals.
However, it remains to be seen whether Dost will have the desired impact for the club. While he has managed a fantastic strike rate in a league as competitive as the Bundesliga, he can thank players like Kevin De Bruyne for the tremendous service he has received. Without the quality of the Belgian playmaker, he may find finding the back of the net more challenging.
