The Dutchman recovered from a slow start to life in the Premier League to help his side regain a place in the Champions League after a year’s absence. However, it is possible that given United’s stature, finishing fourth may no longer be enough for a campaign to be considered a success.

Nevertheless, the owners are reportedly willing to back the manager and will give him £150m to spend on the squad, The Guardian report.

With The Guardian reporting that the signing of Memphis Depay is already in the bag, United’s attention will turn to bolstering their striker options, with Radamel Falcao’s loan move at Old Trafford not being made permanent, and Robin van Persie’s future in the balance.

That may mean that the club go after Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, with The Guardian suggesting that they would be willing to pay £40m for the Frenchman.

However, their priorities may change the report suggests, should David De Gea leave the side for the Bernabeu, leaving just Victor Valdes as their only first-team goalkeeping option.
