Memphis Depay has revealed that Manchester United tried to persuade the 21-year-old from playing in the final two games of the Eredivisie season.
Manchester United Transfer Gossip
The Guardian report that the winger – who completed his transfer to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth around £25m – was instructed by both clubs that he should miss the matches against Heracles and ADO Den Haag, through fear that he would collect an injury. However, along with coach Phillip Cocu, he decided that he would feature in the fixtures, much to the annoyance of the two clubs.
“I really wanted to play and for our coach it was not a big issue,” he explained.
“PSV and Manchester United were not pleased. They both suggested that I sit out because of fear over injuries,” he added.
It is perhaps unsurprising that United were taking precautions when it came to the Dutchman. Depay is one of the most exciting youngsters anywhere in the world, and was pivotal in PSV clinching their first title for seven years. He scored 22 goals, and created another five for his teammates.
If he had picked up a knock, it would have given the Louis van Gaal’s side a horrible sense of deja vu. The Guardian reported that fifteen years ago, Ruud van Nistelrooy was closing in on an £18.5m deal – coincidentally from the same club – when he ruptured his cruciate ligament and had to miss a year. He would complete his deal in 2001.
