Recently re-elected FIFA President Sepp Blatter has sensationally resigned in the wake of the corruption allegations that have engulfed football’s governing body.
And while there was much speculation about what Blatter would have to say, it was largely unexpected that the Swiss would actually resign, especially so soon after defeating Prince Ali so comprehensively in the recent election.
The Mirror suggest that Blatter’s decision was made in the wake of the announcement that he would serve a fifth term, after he realised how unpopular the decision was with the world of football.
“Although the members have re-elected me, this mandate does not seem to be supported by everyone in the world of football,” he said.
“The interests of FIFA are very dear to me and that is why I have taken this decision,” he added.
Blatter’s statement gave no indication of when he will actually stand down, although it will clearly be in the very near future, or who will actually replace him as the person in charge of world football.
