Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has delivered a warning to star playmaker Mesut Ozil saying that he must step up against the Premier League’s bigger sides next season and that he must be more consistent, the Metro
Ozil was the subject of some unrestrained criticism during his first campaign at the club, but the 26-year-old’s performances improved considerably as the second half of last season as the Gunners chalked up a third place finish and a second successive FA Cup title.
However, Arsenal will be looking to build on their achievements of the previous term by mounting a genuine title challenge in 2015/16, and Lehmann, who enjoyed two successful stints with the club, has said that it’s not good enough for his compatriot to just perform against the smaller sides in the top flight as he’ll have to do it against their competitors in the top four, too.
“Everyone knows he can be a fantastic player. But you need to be a fantastic player in the big games,” Lehmann said.
“You don’t need to be a fantastic player in the small games and mediocre player in the big games.
“He can definitely do that but now he must prove it. You need to know how to think and how to programme yourself.”
