The move represents a second chance for the 29-year-old to make an impact on the Premier League, having struggled while on loan with Manchester United last season. He managed just four goals in 29 games for the Red Devils, leading fans to believe that his best days may well be behind him.

After suffering an anterior cruciate ligament in January 2014, he failed to recapture that form that had once made him so prolific.

He will now link up with former Atletico Madrid colleagues Diego Costa and Felipe Luis at Stamford Bridge, with Jose Mourinho stating he will do everything he can to get the best out of him.

Upon signing, Falcao said: “I am very happy to be joining Chelsea and can’t wait to start training.”

The deal will also see young Croatian midfielder Mario Pasalic, 20, heading in the opposite direction to spend the season with Monaco.
