Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld will undergo a medical at Tottenham on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of a proposed move to White Heart Lane. However, the Belgian’s fitness will not be the largest stumbling block preventing a deal.
According to the Daily Mail, Southampton plan to complain to FIFA about the handling of the deal, as they feel that the La Liga side have missed the deadline to prevent the south coast club completing a move for just £6.8m.
Nevertheless, Atleti have reportedly agreed an £11.5m fee with Mauricio Pochettino’s side, that would see the 26-year-old link up with international teammate Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the White Hart Lane back four.
Spurs conceded 20 more goals than the Saints in the Premier League last season, and the most of anyone that finished in the division’s top seven. Signing a player of Alderweireld’s quality, should the legal action not become a factor, will help the side build upon a decent year where they spent some of the campaign in the race for a place in the top four.
