Santi Cazorla has explained that he has signed a new contract with Arsenal because he believes they are the best club for him, and hopes to help them win trophies, the Daily
The Express suggest that the 30-year-old was attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, but instead opted to remain at the Emirates, and signed a new deal that will keep him with the north London side until 2017.
And he explained that, despite the interest from the La Liga side, there was not a decision to make (via Express).
“I think this is the best moment in my career and the best club for me, and for the future,” he said.
He suggested that there is major cause for optimism ahead of the new Premier League season, as the acquisitions made over the past couple of years would suggest that the side are on the verge of something very special.
“Every year we have a better team and we sign some good players every summer, like Mesut [Ozil], like Alexis [Sanchez], like Petr Cech now, and this is important for me and the club. Of course we want to improve every year
Although Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez may be higher profile names, Cazorla has proved to be an equally vital member of Arsene Wenger’s side since his arrival in 2012.
The Spaniard expertly adapted to being used slightly deeper last season and became the perfect foil to Francis Coquelin’s tough-tackling nature. His defensive position made him harder to mark, and meant that his marauding runs gave defenders numerous headaches, even when he wasn’t on the ball.
