David De Gea: “I want to be a United hero”

Manchester United will take on Liverpool in Sunday’s Premier League classic. In a rare interview with Sky Sports Red Devils’ goalkeeper David De Gea has declared his desire to become a club icon at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard has been linked with a move to his home country for quite some time now. De Gea almost left United during the summer of 2015 for Real Madrid, only to see the transfer collapse. The paperwork didn’t get done in time for it to pass.

Therefore, the 25-year-old missed the first four league matches, before making his season debut in the home encounter with…Liverpool. The Reds were send home with a 3-1 defeat, with De Gea receiving a warm welcome from the fans before the match started.

“I cannot describe how I felt in that moment,” said De Gea. “In another country, at another club, the fans would not be the same as at Manchester United. They are some of the best in the world, it was unbelievable.”

De Gea later signed a new deal at Old Trafford, with a significant release clause. And Real Madrid have been banned from doing transfers during the next two windows, giving United fans hope that the Spaniard will stay with the club.

Now, the goalkeeper has given the club another boost. When talking about United legends Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, De Gea said:

“They were the greatest goalkeepers in the Premier League, they are legends for this club and that is what I want.”

This season, De Gea has made 25 appearances in all competitions. He has conceded 25 goals, while keeping 11 clean sheets during the process.
