According to the terms, the Red Devils would have had to pay €50 million (£38.8m) to Los Blancos if they had had sold the Argentina international to the Catalan club before the end of the summer transfer window in 2015.
The contract also contained clauses of payments of €40 million (£31m) on selling the player to the Catalan club before the end of the 2016 summer transfer window and of €30 million (£23.2m) on selling him before the end of his United contract.
Di Maria’s time at United failed to live up to the expectations, and he could only score three times in 27 appearances for the Red Devils.
Eventually, he was sold to Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain for £44.4 million after only one season at Old Trafford.
