Fletcher eyes victory in Benfica clash

Darren Fletcher has insisted that a victory over Benfica in the Champions League this week is crucial for Manchester United.

United are currently joint top with the Portuguese side and sit three points above third placed Basel, which means that a victory over Benfica followed by a draw in their last game against the Swiss club would see the Red Devils qualify.

But Fletcher feels it is important for United to finish top of the group as it will give them a better chance of avoiding the big sides in the second-round.

He told Press Association: “You do want to finish top. First and foremost you look to qualify for the knockout stages but we saw Arsenal finish second last season and end up with Barcelona in the first knockout round.

“Although people say you have to beat these teams if you want to win the competition, it is good to avoid them until later on. It also give you little perks like having the second leg at home.”
