Ex-Barcelona Coach Tito Vilanova has died today at the age of 45, reports Football
A statement on the club’s Twitter account said: “FC Barcelona is in immense mourning. Tito Vilanova has died at the age of 45. May he rest in peace.”
Vilanova was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011, but after treatment involving chemotherapy, was well enough to take over from former manager Pep Guardiola in 2012.
He was part of the Barca academy as a player and was assistant to Guardiola from 2008, before taking over for one campaign in which he led Barcelona to the league title and the Champions League semi-finals.
He was replaced by Gerardo Martino in 2013 after his health deteriorated and yesterday was admitted to hospital to undergo surgery after scans revealed complications with his condition.
Barca President Josep Maria Bartomeu added: “He will be an eternal human and footballing reference for FC Barcelona. Thank you for everything you have taught us. Rest in peace.”
