6. Angel Di Maria – Real Madrid to Manchester United (£59.7m)
After helping Real Madrid to La Decima, and then Argentina to the World Cup final – where he often outshone Lionel Messi – it seemed like an excellent buy when Louis van Gaal managed to persuade Angel Di Maria to join Manchester United. However, since then, his career has experienced a worrying decline. He made a blistering start to his Old Trafford career, and scored a goal of the season contender against Leicester. But, speculation persists that he is now heading for the exit, and you would imagine there won’t be many arguments should his United career come to an end in the near future.
5. James Rodriguez – Monaco to Real Madrid (£63m)
After an unbelievable World Cup – where the Colombian finished the tournament as the leading goalscorer – he joined Real Madrid as Los Blancos continued something of a second attempt at constructing a team of Galacticos. While some of his teammates have largely the stolen the headlines during his first campaign at the Bernabeu, he has enjoyed a solid first year, with 13 goals in 29 La Liga games. He will hoping to improve that record, but more importantly, help the club win some trophies, after a barren year last time out.
