The Portugal star had arrived at Old Trafford as a promising talent, but one that lacked the ability to handle the physicality of the Premier League. However, by the time he headed for Real Madrid, he had completely changed as a player, but managed to keep hold of his frightening skill. He had won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, and helped the side clinch the Champions League in the same year. In just 200 La Liga games for Madrid, he has managed 225 goals, which leaves him three strikes behind club legend Raul, who took 550 games to reach his total.

1. Gareth Bale – Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid (£86m)

The Tottenham winger recovered from a very slow start at White Hart Lane, to become one of the world’s best by the time Real Madrid made their world record move for the Welshman. He looked well on his way to justifying such an incredible fee when he scored a stunning winner in the Copa Del Rey final against Barcelona, and followed that up with the crucial goal in the Champions League final that same year. However, his second year has been more of a struggle.
